(Happy) Independance day

I thought id get arrested taking these pictures at Dadar station. lol!! This is the platform for the trains going to town (Churchgate) at around 9.25in the morning which essentially still qualifies as peak time, though 8.30 -9.00 is the "peakest" time.

Happy Independance day?

Its strange that most of our architectural wonders, heritage buildings, (Army Navy bldg, Fort, VT terminus) are built by the British. Also our Rail/Postal services were set up by them too.

Before i sound like im on "their" side, im not. I only think that they left us with a lot of good infrastructure, architecture and fundamental layouts.

Coming back to Happy Independance day. I wonder how many of us value what it means, how many of us truly would die for our country if the need ever arose, how many of us actually sing the national anthem when it plays before the start of a movie ( i do, and have been laughed at many a time). The other day i happened to make plans with a friend for wednesday night, just to catch up it hd been a while. A minute into the discussion as to wher we should go had him hit his hand on his head and say "oh shit its a dry day i think". No offence or anythign, but this is a reaction i would expect from most people (who like to drink i.e.). BUt the larger picture is that its our Independance day! Its the day India opened her eyes and brought to the world the first glimpse of the soon to be largest democracy. 60 yrs on, it stil persists. Much to the chagrin of all the people and world leaders who thought democracy would die with Nehru .

Indian democracy will always find someone. Not that i have much faith n the current set of politicians/leaders/government officers/anybody in power for that matter. Neither do i have faith in the poor gullible uneducated janta who gets swayed by some starry promises of regularising slums built beyond 1996 so that they get to keep their homes, or regular supplies of water, or buying farm land at a price that ia reasonable and just, or other such castles in the sky promised by filthy money laudering vite grabbing politicians. Ill commend the stupidity of their actions though, after all, being stupid to such extremes is also an art.

What im talking about is a yr ago or 2 was it? Mr Karunanidhi gave away 25,000 color tv's as part of the campaign promise. Now i can think of a hundred other places the money couldve been used but then im sure color tv's were more important right?

At least democracy ensures that we get to choose our own idiots.

it's my turn now i guess - to say couldnt agree more.
We choose our own idiots.
but have you noticed something?
through our zillion mistakes, we have been making very sensible diplomatic moves. and we're positioned just right. talk aout aligning with russia when we started off, and getting closer to america and EU now. it all makes perfect sense to me.
our idiots have behind them the good-will of a few billion people, i guess.

happy independance day.
Like you rightly said, i wish our people moved ahead of saying their jai hinds, and then spit man onto their neighbor's wall.

well on a sidenote, i sing along to the national anthem myself. and the other day, they did not laugh - as a matter of fact, the whole movie hall followed.

whatever is the bigger art is to sit on ur shields and not do anything but blame everything on the politicians and the uneducated junta and ...very obviously not be a part of any of these .... the problem is that u dont choose these idiots ...
picture this .. in the last parliamentary elections ... the Bombay City voter turnout was a meagre 37% ... while the so called uneducated lot in rural india voted in throngs .... i wonder if all of our educated india like U and Me start voting ... will we still choose idiots ?? ... it is much easier to blame ...
but one needs to know that a dry day should not be the only sacrifice that you make for this country ... and live the anthem not just sing it

@ TW - :)Amen. although i wish cricket would also pick up on aggressiveness!

@ J A N Indian - if you read carefully, thats exactly what im trying to say. The poor get carried away by silly promises which are left unfulfilled, while the rich are just indifferent. while i do not belong to either the politicians or the poor strata, im coming from a common man's point of view. And the context of the post is not a blame game - since YOU and me both are caught in this circle and not in the position to do anythign about it, be rest assured my friend that occasion demanding, i shall stand up for my rights/my country and not bow down.

No I did not mean anything personal against you"
I just commented on the unconfirmed (with facts) atrociousness of this entire paragraph.

"Neither do i have faith in the poor gullible uneducated janta who gets swayed by some starry promises of regularising slums built beyond 1996 so that they get to keep their homes, or regular supplies of water, or buying farm land at a price that ia reasonable and just, or other such castles in the sky promised by filthy money laudering vite grabbing politicians. I do not they are stupid .. i dont think they are swayed ... i think they understand the situation much better that any of us do... ..
had the so called educated lot voted as much as these ppl do and understood the situation from a common man's point of view ..
noone questions your dedication ... .. i just question the unfair comments on ppl you do not really know about ...

@ JA Indian - Atrociousness?
without facts??
maybe you should do some reading Sir, cos this is exactly what these people are promised, regularising their slums, water etc. And how are they unfair comments?!I am totally in awe of their faith that someday things will change for them, and they vote with the same zest election after election. Either ways, its my opinion and if you dont share it, i wont take kindly to being called atrocious and factless.

When you got to choose some1 from a horde of 10 criminals , as an educated common man you would choose the least criminal minded one according to your understanding or then you might not just vote! While the former ensures that you are a part of the voting process and the latter marks you as a guy who doesnt vote and believe in the whole process of making your vote count, I think today the choices we have dont really help us make the best choice. People like us can vote and make a difference but if people like us can work for the country and become a part of the election process, its gonna make the difference we wish to achieve. If Mr.APJ Abdul Kalam would contest the general elections, I am sure he will get the maximum votes to get elected. May be we start being the difference we want the leaders to show us!

Lately, they've been trying to make the whole national anthem before the movie experience "cool".

They started off with the 3D flag (which I find looks really stupid).

Then they got all these famous singers to sing the anthem. I find this one particularly apalling. While a few of these singers do have tiny badges representing the Indian flag (shiny ones, not the bright tri colour we're all familiar with), a few do not. It might be argued that it's really the anthem, the words that we're standing up for, but, in essence, we're symbolically standing up for some singers, and not the flag.

Or, I could just be reading waaay too much into this instead of enjoying the damn movie!

@ Abhishek - I agree, some people who dont vote dont do it out of being lazy or foolish, but because they'd rather "waste" their vote rather than vote for the "least" bad. Polls have shown what little Faith Indians have in our leaders who are embroiled in scam after scam... anyway i could go on i should stop!

@ Ashwin - With due respect to your opinion, i find that this smal move actually helps! When it first started, i remeber lots of people around me grumbling about having to stand up and sing et all, while i was the enthu one. now, if you look around, you'll actually find a lot of people actually mouthing/singing the words. the people who dont stand are made to stand by the people who are. i just think in this timespace that we are in, with the youth and country being swayed from national values, this would go a looong way in inculcating some amount of National Spirit! A small way maybe - but still.
